The text examines the intellectual relationship and major controversies between Hans Kelsen and Eric Voegelin. It focuses on their contrasting approaches to the state, politics, democracy, and scientific method. Particular attention is given to Voegelin’s critique of Kelsen’s legal positivism and to their disputes over Austria’s authoritarian state and The New Science of Politics. The author argues that their lasting disagreement stemmed primarily from fundamentally different epistemological premises: Kelsen maintained a normative and neo-Kantian approach, whereas Voegelin emphasized the historical, political, and transcendent dimensions of human experience. The professor Manfred Henningsen wrote this text in response to a call for submissions from the Voegelin Society, and we are publishing it with their permission.

Jerry Martin’s essay explores different understandings of salvation and the human predicament in religion, philosophy, and Eric Voegelin’s thought. Martin rejects the idea of one universal problem and one universal solution, emphasizing personal experience, spiritual discernment, and living in truth. Drawing on Hinduism, Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Christianity, and literature, he argues that each person faces different challenges, responsibilities, and callings. Existential soteriology therefore means responding to what life requires through conscience, inner promptings, and everyday circumstances. Rather than escaping the world, the individual is called to engage with its difficulties and discern what is spiritually required. This paper was published with the permission of American partners. This paper examines Eric Voegelin’s hermeneutical approach through his interpretation of Jean Bodin. It distinguishes two dialectically related modes of interpretation, described as “open” and “closed” hermeneutics. Particular attention is given to the “open” interpretation, in which Voegelin seeks to penetrate the motivating center of a thinker’s work while relating it to its civilizational environment. The analysis argues that Voegelin’s reading of Bodin becomes a dialogical encounter in which Bodin’s thought and Voegelin’s own philosophical questions mutually illuminate one another, producing a distinctive “third position” between author and interpreter. Im Rahmen des 10. Internationalen Eric-Voegelin-Symposiums in Köln wurde zu Beginn des neuen Jahrtausends die Frage nach der geistigen Krise des Westens erörtert, die Eric Voegelin in den 1950er- und 1960er-Jahren in seinem Werk auf originelle Weise diagnostiziert hatte. Der Autor des Beitrags, Hermann Lübbe, setzt sich in seiner Schrift Krisen zivilisatorischer Evolution. Über Säkularisierungszwänge kritisch mit Eric Voegelins Diagnose einer geistigen Krise des Westens auseinander. Während Voegelin die Säkularisierung vor allem als Verdrängung der Religion versteht, zeigt Lübbe, dass sie unter bestimmten Bedingungen gerade zur Präsenz und Freiheit der Religion beitragen kann. Er unterscheidet drei religionsfördernde Wirkungen: die Befreiung des Glaubens von Konflikten mit wissenschaftlichen Weltbildern, die pragmatische Bewertung technischer und ökonomischer Fortschritte sowie die politische Neutralisierung der Rechtsordnung und damit die Sicherung der Religionsfreiheit. Abschließend thematisiert Lübbe die erneute Bedeutung der Religion in der internationalen Politik und weist die aufklärerische Erwartung zurück, die Modernisierung müsse notwendig zum Religionsschwund führen. Eric Voegelin analysiert in der Studie „Toynbee: Geschichte als Suche nach der Wahrheit“ die Entwicklung des historischen Denkens von Arnold J. Toynbee in seinem Werk „A Study of History“. Er zeigt, dass sich Toynbees ursprüngliches Verständnis von Geschichte als Studium der Zivilisationen allmählich zu einem umfassenderen Konzept entwickelt, in dem die Geschichte der Religion und der geistige Fortschritt der Menschheit zum zentralen Gegenstand werden. Mit Bezug auf das Archiv und mit freundlicher Genehmigung der Eric-Voegelin-Gesellschaft stellen wir die Auseinandersetzung dieser beiden Persönlichkeiten der 1960er Jahre vor, die von der Geschichte der Zivilisationen, historischen religiösen Symbolen und dem geistigen Verständnis von Wahrheit fasziniert waren. Der Umfang deutet darauf hin, dass das Werk unvollendet bleiben musste …

Kromě názorů na vývoj existenciální filosofie představil Jiří Olšovský v rozhovoru s Erikem Havlíkem i připravovaný anglicko-český slovník, který obsahuje všechna důležitá slova a celé vazby potřebné ke správnému překladu anglických odborných (i obyčejných) knih, článků a studií. Na filosofické termíny a pojmy je kladen velký důraz. Dílo, které má nyní přes 2 200 stran, původně vznikalo jako slovník filosofických pojmů a termínů, ovšem bylo neustále doplňováno o běžná slova a výrazy. Autor vychází z dlouholetých zkušeností encyklopedisty v Encyklopedickém ústavu a z vědecké práce ve Filosofickém ústavu Akademie věd ČR, kde se zabýval myšlením Kierkegaardovým, Patočkovým a Heideggerovým. V Masarykově ústavu AV ČR pak editoval Masarykovu knihu Základové konkretné logiky; zabýval se jeho pojetím subjektivity a objektivity, nihilismu a titanismu, včetně jeho chápání zbožnosti.  

Dvanáct let od úmrtí bývalého prezidenta Václava Havla jsme si připomněli 18. prosince na Hrádečku na Trutnovsku přečtením eseje Miroslava Petruska – autora, který se rozloučil se světem rok po Václavovi Havlovi. Oba byli ročník 1936, stejně jako Pavel Landovský, Jan Sokol, Milan Uhde a mnoho dalších osobností, jež musely čelit hned dvěma totalitním režimům.

Jerry L. Martin also posed stimulating questions in his paper presented at the 39th International Meeting of the Eric Voegelin Society in Los Angeles and then in an article for VoegelinView. He sees Eric Voegelin as a spiritual thinker, even though he did not identify with any particular religion. He admired what he called the "open soul" in, for example, William James and other American thinkers. Jerry L. Martin elaborates his position in the context of three major philosophers who have addressed questions of religion, morality and human knowledge in a broader social and cultural context: Robert Bellah, Charles Taylor and Linda Zagzebski.  

Abigail L. Rosenthal, author of the award-winning A Good Look at Evil, poses thought-provoking questions to Eric Voegelin and Martin Buber in her paper presented at the 39th International Meeting of the Eric Voegelin Society in Los Angeles and then in an article for VoegelinView. Since Voegelin attributes some of his biblical understanding to Martin Buber, he finds it important to see if Buber deals with the same biblical issues. How is the term "leap in being" to be understood in this context?
