I’m not that happy with the “master teacher” title, bearing in mind André Glucksmann’s questioning of the so-called “master thinkers,” except in the sense that I think everyone here is thinking of. That is to say, of Voegelin as an intellectual and spiritual authority. Unlike the other contributors to this panel, I didn’t have Voegelin as a teacher in the sense that I attended his lectures or that he directed my thesis. Still, I had no hesitation in the Foreword of my 1980 doctoral thesis in thanking him “for his wisdom and kind guidance — for me he has been the Socrates who bears in his heart the image of Everlasting Beauty.” For Voegelinview by Brendan Purcell.

Díla, která se týkají totalitarismu, mají v Čechách značné zpoždění, a pokud již vyjdou, nejsou nijak zvlášť propagována. Příkladem může být i slavné dílo Hannah Arendtové Původ totalitarismu (The Origins of Totalitarianism), které vyšlo v New Yorku již v roce 1951. Důvod bude nejspíše zřejmý: srovnávání nacismu se stalinismem. Příspěvek na Voegelin Principles připomíná kořeny totalitarismu 20. století a varuje před plíživým návratem „starých pořádků“ nejenom ve státech posttotalitních.

Text byl přednesen nejprve jako přednáška na London School of Economics a v roce 1962 s mírnými úpravami publikován v knize Rationalism in Politics and Other Essays. Oakeshottovu dílu se v současné době věnuje i nakladatelství Oikoymenh, které připravuje výbor z jeho esejí. Na Voegelin Principles vychází se souhlasem nakladatelství společně s odkazy na další texty, které připravila Voegelin Society.        

V rámci tématu Totalitarismus představujme se svolením Sociologického ústavu AV ČR text Miloslava Petruska, který popisuje Raymonda Arona jako osobnost, která spoluurčovala duchovní, kulturní, intelektuální a politickou tvářnost Francie po několik desetiletí 20. století. Přesto později téměř zmizel z učebnic a příruček sociologie a politické vědy a v historických monogra­fiích se objevuje jako marginálie, jako cosi zvláštně nezařaditelného, snad do­konce obtěžujícího. 

Ačkoli byli Voegelin i Heidegger zpočátku velmi ovlivněni Husserlem, oba se o něj později odklonili a rozvinuli své vlastní filosofie. Rozdílnost je patrná kromě oblasti právní a politické hlavně v teorii vědomí, kde Voegelin mluví o „účasti duše na božském“, Heideggerovým cílem je překonat nejenom moderní pozitivismus a scientismus, nýbrž i metafyziku samu. Chce ji nahradit druhem básnického zamyšlení nad bytím, posledním zdrojem všeho jsoucího.

Medzi celoživotnými priateľmi Erica Voegelina patrili okrem iných i Leo Strauss. Obaja boli bezprostredne donútení k tomu, aby opustili strednú Európu v dôsledku nástupu nacionálneho socializmu. Spájalo je aj téma osudu "západného človeka", ktorý sa stal tým, čím jest, na základe stretnutí biblickej viery a gréckeho myslenia, spájaného s mestami Jeruzalem a Atény.    

Als die Reihe Occasional Papers im April 1996 mit Eric Voegelins Vortrag „Die geistige und politische Zukunft der westlichen Welt“ eröffnet wurde, wurde sie zwar von vielen guten Wünschen und Hoffnungen begleitet, doch stand ihr Erfolg in den Sternen. Der nur als Tonbandaufzeichung vorhandene Vortrag wurde für den Druck sprachlich leicht überarbeitet. In June of 1973 Ellis Sandoz went to Eric Voegelin’s home in Palo Alto, California to help record his reminiscences about his life and work. These reminiscences were eventually published as Autobiographical Reflections and later included in Volume 34 of the Collected Works.
